Artist Statement
I am a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores nostalgia, memory and what it means to us as humans. Through my art, I work to explore the relationship between people, nature and the power of memories to transport us to a different time and place.
My work is rooted in my vast collection of natural and vintage objects gathered over more than four decades. These objects are at once familiar and distant. I love all things vintage - paper ephemera, furniture that shows the eye and hand of the craftsman who made it, the odd turn of phrase found in a well worn book, the small unidentifiable rusty thing in the midst of nature's reclamation, and the little unexpected gifts of nature found on a simple walk in the woods. I love the act of disassembling things and then reanimating them to give them new life. It is that thread of life that flows through everything that I take such pleasure in gathering so that they can be rewoven into a new story. I strive to give the imagery a deeper significance by creating a portrait of these objects, whether as a painting, print or assemblage piece, which helps the viewer to see that which they might otherwise overlook.
I use my work to tell stories where words fail me By working in multiple mediums I have a larger vocabulary to more effectively convey the stories I seek to tell. I often use poetry, or lines from a book I have read, to title my work. The words I choose as a title, help to tell the story of a given piece. As an artist, I choose words carefully to allow the viewer time to process a piece using their own emotions, thoughts and experiences. My titles allow people to personalize their viewing experience.
